To qualify for a WG-05: Experience in the operation of a wildland fire cache or warehouse in order to procure, issue, control, store and judge the physical condition of a wide variety of fire suppression and fire safety items within the wildland fire community as a warehouse worker. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates. Physical Demands: Work requires standing on hard surfaces for extended periods of time, stooping, bending, and working in tiring and sometimes uncomfortable positions. The incumbent is required to lift and carry items that weigh up to 40 pounds (8 kilograms) on a recurring basis. Heavier items are moved with weighted-handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. The incumbent may be required to work at a rapid pace for long periods of time. During periods of high fire activity, the incumbent may be required to work long shifts for periods of time up to 21 days without days off. Work Environment: Work is performed in both inside and outside areas that may be hot, cold, dry, wet, drafty, and poorly lighted. There is regular exposure to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, bruises, abrasions, falls, and injury from falling stock or mechanized work areas. Work may require wearing protective clothing, such as hard hats, steel-toed shoes, rubber gloves, masks, and rubber aprons.
