Job Description

This position has an individual occupational requirement that must be met to be considered. Read the Education section to ensure you meet these requirements. In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience. You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples. To qualify for the GS-12 you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11. Examples of specialized experience may include: Forestry experience that provided the knowledge and skill in applying and administering a range of forestry land management principles, concepts, and practices in several related disciplines such as wildlife, ecology, hydrology, or soil science sufficient to ensure compliance of forest and woodland management objectives. Experience performing as a forester for silviculture, forest, and woodland management programs. Experience in forest management including timber harvest, timber sale contracts and administration. Providing recommendations to annual work plans and program budget. To qualify for the GS-13 you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12. Examples of specialized experience may include: Forestry experience that provided the knowledge and skill in applying and administering a range of forestry land management principles, concepts, and practices in several related disciplines such as wildlife, ecology, hydrology, or soil science sufficient to ensure compliance of forest and woodland management objectives. Experience overseeing or performing as a lead forester for silviculture, forest, and woodland management programs. Expertise in timber harvest, timber sale contracts and administration. Developing annual work plans and program budget. Education may not be substituted for specialized experience. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: Work is primarily sedentary. Some travel may be required to field offices for on-site review of forest product sales, measurements, and harvest operations. Physical efforts and stamina may be required to operate on steep forest terrain. Work Environment: Work is performed in an office setting with occasional field trips. Travel requires that the incumbent drive government vehicles in a variety of weather and terrain. Field visits usually involve strenuous walking and climbing through steep terrain, hazardous footing conditions due to downed trees, logs, brush, or debris. Rain or snowy conditions may compound these hazards. Proper safety precautions required.
