Job Summary
This position functions in a developmental capacity leading to the full performance level of a Surgical Technician (ST), which is a member of the surgical team and aids the surgeon and other team members during surgical procedures. The Surgical Technician participates with the surgical team members in planning and implementing complex procedures under the continuing guidance of the surgical team.

Selective Placement Factor: Certified Surgical Technologist certificate preferred. BCLS (American Heart Association): Active Basic Cardiac Life Support card Preferred experience: 2-5 years Surgical technologist experience You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: GS-06 Grade Requirements: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of a Health Technician (Surgical Technician) in a developmental capacity and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Qualifying specialized experience is defined as experience performing work as a surgical technician, operating room assistant, or surgical technologist performing scrub duties for all inpatient and outpatient surgical procedure; setting up for the surgical procedure; assembling equipment and supplies as well as monitoring and maintaining aseptic techniques throughout the procedure; coordinating or participating in the positioning and prepping of patients and obtaining supplies; specimen handling; and assisting the surgeon by performing such procedures as preparing skin graphs, suctioning, holding retractors, applying skin staples and cuffing sutures. GS-07 Grade Requirements: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of a Health Technician (Surgical Technician) and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Qualifying specialized experience is defined as experience utilizing universal precautions and following all Infection Control policies and procedures when handling specimens, supplies and equipment; Handling all specimens appropriately; prepares, organizes and maintain highly complex sterile surgical setups; Assisting in training residents, medical students, nursing students, operating room technology students and new Operating Room (OR) staff in the operation of equipment, sterile techniques, handling of instrument, and Operating Room procedures to include the scrub role in surgical procedures, and Function as a second circulator for complex surgical procedures. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience for the GS-07 level. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed one full year of graduate education to meets the requirements for GS-7. Progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a major field of study related to the work of the position which provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of this position. (NOTE: TRANSCRIPTS MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH THE APPLICATION). OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education must be in excess of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
