Job Description
Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for Historian: Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in history; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history. OR Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you MUST also meet the qualification requirements listed below: GS-11 - Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience with archaeological, historic or architectural historic studies and evaluations conducted within the framework of Section 106 to include experience with related disciplines (e.g. history, anthropology, geography, etc). This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: archaeology, anthropology or history. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. GS-12 - Specialized Experience:One year of specialized experience which includes performing at least TWO of the following: 1 Preparing detailed studies of historic buildings and structures including the treatment of the physical history and furnishings; 2 Managing consultation and compliance issues focused on the built environment (including historic structures and buildings) and pursuant to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and the National Environmental Policy Act; 3 Conducting built-environment/cultural resources investigations to assist in the preparation of review documents for compliance Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA); 4 Identifying and evaluating the significance of built-environment/historic structures and buildings; 5 Participating in and communicating with multi-disciplinary teams and integrating built environment and cultural resources concerns and documents into project and planning review processes; 6 Managing projects or programs assuring financial management to plan and execute cultural resources programs, focused on the built environment (including historic structures and buildings) within scope, schedule and budget; 7 Developing and managing budgets and contracts for cultural resource studies or services to be conducted by contractors for the Government. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). In addition to meeting the basic education requirement and the qualifications requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the selective placement factor listed below: You must have successfully completed a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree in architectural history, art history, historic preservation, or closely related field with coursework in American architectural history or a bachelor's degree in architectural history, art history, historic preservation or closely related field plus one of the following: At least two years of full-time experience in research, writing, or teaching in American architectural history or restoration architecture with an academic institution, historical organization or agency, museum, or other professional institution; OR Substantial contribution through research and publication to the body of scholarly knowledge in the field of American architectural history.
