Job Summary

About the Position: Serves as supervisor of the Health Technicians in the Ophthalmology Service, which provides inpatient and outpatient medical care services to military personnel, retirees, and their dependents. Functions of the service include examination, diagnosis and treatment of injuries and disorders of the eye by surgical and medical means. Performs technical work of a medical nature subordinate to doctors in the Ophthalmology Service.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. INSERVICE APPLICANTS (current or prior Federal competitive or excepted service) Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) measuring a patient's vision, eye pressure, eye muscle function, muscle movement, and pupil reactions; 2) assisting during eye procedures and surgery; and 3) recording a patient's color and scope of vision. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: Two full years of graduate level education or a master's degree in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as optometry or ophthalmology. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours of graduate education beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. OUTSIDE APPLICANTS Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) measuring a patient's vision, eye pressure, eye muscle function, muscle movement, and pupil reactions; 2) assisting during eye procedures and surgery; 3) collecting patients' medical histories, maintaining equipment, and clarifying concepts to patients; and 4) operating ophthalmic imaging. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08). OR Education: Two full years of graduate level education or a master's degree in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as optometry or ophthalmology. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.
