Job Summary

This announcement is for multiple seasonal Park Ranger positions for Montana Dakotas. Positions to start in the 2025 season beginning April through June. This is an open continuous vacancy announcement. Applicants will be referred monthly throughout the announcement period. Job Description

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. The following positions will be hired from this vacancy announcement: Visitor Use - Advises visitors on safety, amenities, rules and regulations of a recreational site. Interpretation - Develops interpretive programs both formally and informally to a variety of people. Off-Highway-Vehicle (OHV) - Provides OHV information to the public, performs maintenance and monitoring to off-highway vehicle use area. River Patrol (Class 1 Rivers) - Provides river information to the public, performs maintenance and monitoring on a Class 1 River. General - Provides area information to the public, performs maintenance and monitoring throughout recreation areas. GS-5: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-4 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: explaining rules and regulations to park visitors; providing information and advice on park trails, activities and resources; collecting fees; issuing reservations and permits; conducting guided tour programs; navigate Class I whitewater rapids; assist with maintenance and repair of roads and trails; maintenance and clean-up of recreation areas; preform compliance and safety checks. -OR- Education: You must have completed four years of study above high school leading to a Bachelor's degree with 24 semester/36 quarter hours in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. - OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. GS-7: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-5 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: park guide or tour leader; archaeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; planning day to day operation of a recreation area providing such facilities as camping, water sports, picnic areas, or coordinating routine activities with maintenance personnel; advising visitors concerning off road vehicle use and safety on public lands; navigate Class I whitewater rapids; maintenance and repair of recreation areas such as roads and trails; preform compliance and safety checks. -OR- Education: You must have completed one year of graduate study leading to a Master's degree with 18 semester/27 quarter hours in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. - OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. -OR- Superior Academic Achievement (See OPM's General Policies, Application of Qualification Standards Section 4.f.) S.A.A. must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: The work is performed mostly outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces. The position requires physical exertion such as, but not limited to, driving over unpaved roads, walking over rough terrain or inclines, standing for long periods of time, sitting in watercraft for long periods of time, bending, crouching and stooping, digging, hiking, rowing, lifting, biking, stretching, reaching, wading, or similar activities. Work may involve early morning hours, night hours, or daytime hours and may require working on holidays. It can require carrying heavy backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, or other loads. Work Environment: Most work will be performed out of doors, in all types of weather conditions, terrain, and elevations. Work may take place in an extremely remote environment and may require primitive camping and living skills for upwards of two weeks in duration. Indoor duties are performed in a normal office setting.
