Job Description
Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. For GS-4: Six months General experience including (1) any type of work which demonstrates the ability to perform the work of the position; or (2) experience that provided knowledge in performing drafting assignments AND six months of specialized experience which includes making simple text edits on drawing sheets from red-line marks under closer than normal supervision. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03). OR Education: Two years of education above the high school level that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as engineering, engineering or industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science, or mathematics. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages. For GS-5: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes setting up drawing sheets, adding text to drawings, and drawing simple features. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). OR Education: Four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in an appropriate field of engineering, construction, or industrial technology; OR (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as engineering, engineering or industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science, or mathematics. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. For GS-6: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes copying elements from an existing drawing or using Standard Details and modifying them to make a new drawing. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). For GS-7: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes working from rough sketches, notes, verbal instructions, and data from computer programs. Under supervision use MicroStation/InRoad/OpenRoad and/or AutoDesk Civil 3D to layout project geometry and to develop Profiles and Cross-Sections. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). For GS-8: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes working from rough sketches, notes, verbal instructions, and data from computer programs. Prepare and complete new drawings of a civil works project such as a flood control or navigation dam or local protection project. Review detailed civil site designs on levees, and navigation structures. Use MicroStation/InRoad/OpenRoad and/or AutoDesk Civil 3D to independently layout project geometry and to develop Profiles and Cross-Sections. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). For GS-9: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes design and consolidate of specialize designs such as grading plans, utility layouts, and other civil site features of work. Final design study reports centering on construction feasibility and cost. Create memorandums for narrative rationale and graphic designs and final construction drawings. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08). For GS-10: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes overseeing the production of civil site design project features, alternative designs, contract plans and specifications. Contract modifications and amendments for minor civil works engineering projects, including multipurpose flood control dams, navigation locks and dams, recreation facilities, local protection floodwalls and levees, and other water-related projects. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). For GS-11: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes overseeing the production of civil site design project features, alternative designs, contract plans and specifications, quantity estimates and engineering during construction including contract modifications and amendments for major civil works engineering projects, including multipurpose flood control dams, navigation locks and dams, recreation facilities, local protection floodwalls and levees, and other water-related projects. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-10). Applicants may be selected at any grade GS-04 through the GS-11 level. The target grade of this position is GS-11. Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For the GS-06 through GS-11 grade levels, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:
