Job Description
Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: 1) Repairing and maintaining a variety of domestic and commercial refrigeration and heating, ventilation and air conditioning units and systems; 2) Testing small units and systems using compound refrigeration gauges and ammeters to locate worn and broken parts; 3) Selecting and obtaining appropriate materials and replacement parts; 4) Inspecting and observing equipment for proper operation, oil levels, cycling, overheated bearings, and unusual noises. Physical Demands: The mechanic normally works from the floor or from ladders to reach equipment, and occasionally from scaffolding and platforms. Work requires considerable standing, climbing, stooping, bending, stretching and working in cramped, awkward positions. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up items weighing up to 40 pounds...50 pounds with assistance. Working Conditions: Most of the work is performed inside, but frequently subject to sudden temperature changes when working on equipment. Work is also frequently performed outside, sometimes in bad weather. Work areas are frequently dusty, moldy, noisy, dirty and greasy; variable temperatures occur when working in cold-storage rooms; subject to possible injuries such as cuts, bruises, burns, and electrical shock; possible respiratory disorders due to inhalation of refrigerant gases. Hearing protective devices and other protective devices and safety equipment must be worn at all times of exposure to the hazardous condition. Working conditions are considered in the evaluation of the job and do not meet criteria for compensation by environmental or hazard pay. Call back and emergency overtime are regular requirements of this position. The incumbent may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social).
